MISSION: To offer activities and events to help foster cultural connections between Filipinos and Americans.
GOAL: To build a strong foundation for Filipino-Americans who share our common belief in helping others in need, building each other up, and to preserve cultural heritage.
Getting together as family and friends for momentous occasions such as a birthday, anniversary, marriage, baptism, graduation, and life celebrations are signature community events for the Filipino expatriates who call Pennsylvania their home. It was at one of these birthday occasion in the fall of 2021 that Charina Boes was introduced to a group of Filipinos who are residents of Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
More Lebanon get-together parties followed where Charina was invited. Discussions centered on how to proceed with a Christmas party for December 3, 2021. A volunteer committee was formed and Charina was asked to assist. After this Christmas party, the committee convened and the team appointed Charina to be the President.
As one who takes challenges seriously, Charina accepted this assignment to be the group President. First order of business was to create a group name identity. By way of Facebook and Messenger chat group, Charina solicited group names for voting. Having received no submissions from anyone in the chatter, Charina decided to list five choices in the messenger conversation for voting. By a few votes, the winning name was Sampaguita Socials! A new group official name was formed for the Filipino-American community of South Central Pennsylvania.
Following the official naming of the group under Charina’s leadership, the group created a private Facebook group page where friends and members can communicate and keep up-to- date with the community happenings and events. Everyone is welcome to join our group and participate in our events whether you have Filipino heritage or not. We are a welcoming and family oriented group. We encourage people to mingle and meet new friends, renew old acquaintances, relax, and socialize as we showcase our Filipino culture and heritage by way of food, music, language, and dances.
In the spring of 2023, Charina met Norma Gerrick at a party through mutual friends. Norma resides in New Oxford, Pennsylvania and leads a circle of friends she calls PBFC (Pennsylvania- Baltimore Filipino Circle) in messenger chat group. Through this chat group, she remains in contact with her former colleagues of Filipino-American educators in the Baltimore school district. Norma is a retired mathematics teacher. An alliance was forged to further the common interests of our friends in Sampaguita-PBFC or simply, Sampaguita for short.
Along with our friends from Philadelphia, Lebanon, Harrisburg, Lancaster, York, Hanover, and Gettysburg, and other east and west locations; we celebrate our culture with others.

Kristina Henderson
Born in Lucena City, Kristina was fortunate to spend her early childhood surrounded by both sides of her family in the Philippines. She would spend her week in Lipa, Batangas at her Lola Olga's to attend preschool and then travel to either Lucena or Manila every weekend to spend time with other family members. At age 4, her parents were offered jobs in the US that would serve as the opportunity for them to provide a better life for their children. During this time of adjustment, Kristina and her younger brother Ben stayed behind with their grandparents. It was through this unique situation that Kristina has such a strong bond with her family back home and the reason why she always wants to return home, despite spending most of her life overseas. Kristina officially moved to the US at age 6. Through her parents' endless sacrifices and incredible courage to start a new life abroad on their own, Kristina was granted the good fortune of growing up abroad and being able achieve so much more of her own goals. After completing high school in Camp Hill, PA, Kristina moved to Philadelphia to attend La Salle University where she graduated as a dual major in Marketing and International Studies. She spent 16 years in the pharmaceutical industry training doctors and their site staff internationally on the process of prioritizing patient experience during their participation in clinical trials. She now works alongside her husband on their various business ventures - from real estate development to serving federal government customers with medical equipment, trauma supplies, personal protective equipment, and logistics services. Kristina and her husband Dave finished building their home in 2020, and after years of being away, they returned to the Mechanicsburg area with their growing family. Now a family of five, they have wholeheartedly enjoyed planting their roots here. Of all things, Kristina is most excited to see such a thriving Filipino community here after missing the feeling of back home for so long. Her children Ethan (10), Isabelle (6), and Lucas (4) have been loving the opportunities to learn about their culture and meeting so many new warm and welcoming people...who have also started to feel like family. :)
